As a Principal Consultant, you will be contributing to growing Triple Line’s portfolio of trade and investment projects, as a senior technical expert within the wider multi-disciplinary Inclusive Growth and Resilience (IGR) team. You will work with a talented multi-national team located across the London, Nairobi and Addis Ababa offices. Triple Line is committed to developing the capacity of our Nairobi and Addis Ababa offices, and you will provide support and transfer skills and knowledge to colleagues as an important part of the role.
Triple Line works with a range of clients including development finance institutions (e.g. World Bank, African Development Bank, Asian Development Bank, Trade and Development Bank), bilateral development partners (e.g. FCDO, AFD, GIZ), philanthropic organisations (e.g. MasterCard Foundation, Shell Foundation, Gatsby), and others such as UNIDO, TradeMark Africa, AGRA. Examples of recent projects that the IGR team has delivered include:
- Triple Line is supporting the Central Corridor (CCTTFA) in its transformation from transit transport corridor to a Green Economic Development Corridor, including developing the Vision and strategy for the corridor, through a series of consultations and participatory workshops, and undertaking pre-feasibility diagnostics for four regional value chains: Electric Vehicles (EVs); Agri-industry; Iron & Steel; and Pharmaceuticals.
- Triple Line completed multiple assignments for TradeMark Africa under the Trade & Logistics Cluster Program, including scoping and feasibility studies for: a cross-border market at Busia, Kenya; a wholesale market in Kigali, Rwanda; development of fisheries, palm oil and fruits value chains in Burundi; horticulture, maize and aquaculture value chains in Busia, Uganda; a greenfield SEZ focussed on light manufacturing in Rwanda; market systems interventions for marine fisheries in Djibouti and Somaliland.
- Triple Line has completed assignments for UNIDO Somalia including a scoping and feasibility assessment for potential SEZ investments in Somalia, focussing on blue economy and horticulture value chains; and a pre-feasibility study of an integrated irrigation and agriculture market services PPP.
Roles and responsibilities and the specific tasks you will undertake:
Technical delivery
- Key technical expert, up to and including Team Leader, for consultancies in the private sector development area, especially around trade and investment, including value chain diagnostics, market assessments, economic impact assessment, and investment appraisal.
- Act as Project Manager on assignments within your areas of expertise, coordinating project teams and project partners and acting as a key company interface with clients on the projects you are involved in. Ensure that projects you manage are delivered on time, on budget, to an outstanding level of quality, and in compliance with key company and client policies and procedures with major risks to project success properly mitigated.
- Lead and support the preparation, design and facilitation of workshops and learning events with the client and delivery partners.
- Present analysis, findings and research clearly both in writing, visually and orally, through case studies, reports and presentations for the client and other stakeholders, to support uptake and sharing of findings.
- Provide mentoring support and capacity building to colleagues, through formal and on-the-job training, guidance and feedback.
Business development
- Act as point of engagement for clients and partners in developing our business, proactively develop client relationships and look for opportunities for follow-up work with existing clients. Establish and sustain senior level client relationships.
- Contribute to business development across the full cycle, from early capture to tender submission. This includes seeking and tracking opportunities, positioning Triple Line within consortia, building suitable project delivery teams, managing the bidding process and co-ordinating inputs, preparing technical and financial inputs for expressions of interest and full tenders, working closely with colleagues across Triple Line.
- Ensure quality standards are met on all submissions under your direction.
- Use MIS tools to monitor, analyse and manage BD pipeline.
- Actively develop a network of external consultants to support in-house teams.
- Contribute to increasing the visibility of Triple Line through attending conferences, raising profile and networking, producing lesson learning materials and/or publications, and supporting Triple Line hosted events, etc. to develop reputation and attract new clients.
About you

Essential candidate attributes:
- Advanced degree in economics, finance, development studies, or related fields
- 10+ years post-qualification experience and strong technical expertise specifically in value chain diagnostics, market assessments, economic impact assessment, and investment appraisal in two or more of the following sectors: private sector development, market systems development, trade, industrial development, agriculture, agribusiness and food security
- Established consultancy skills with experience of successful delivery in the international development sector, able to adapt to changing priorities, manage competing deadlines, communicate confidently with clients and beneficiaries, and able to work under pressure
- Experience working in Africa, in particular East and Horn regions
- Demonstrable project management skills and experience (resource, budget, and work scheduling and management; team co-ordination; meeting tight deadlines)
- Experience in conducting business development activities including: identifying opportunities, developing methodological responses to terms of reference, financial proposals etc.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate findings and recommendations clearly in plain English to a range of audiences and in a variety of formats
Desirable candidate attributes:
- Established working relationships with Triple Line’s existing or potential clients in the region
- Experienced in financial and economic appraisal, e.g. as part of feasibility studies / business case preparation
- Working proficiency of French
